Sailing has been recently added to the Fisu programme (the first university world cup was held in 2002), but it made its first appearance as an optional sport in a Summer Universiade in 1999 in Palma De Mallorca and then in Shenzen in 2011. Given the great tradition of the city for this fascinating discipline, sailing competitions are scheduled for Napoli 2019 as well.
The competition will be held in the Gulf of Naples on a 900m race course. 5 competition days are scheduled for the next Summer Universiade with 16 teams taking part in 3 races with 8 boats. In Shenzen in 2011 China ruled the competition with 4 gold medals won in 8 competitions.
