A compulsory sport since the second Summer Universiade in Sofia in 1961, diving is tightly tied to university sport programmes. Many athletes, who later became world and Olympic champions, took part in university games increasing the level of competition year after year. During Napoli 2019, individual divers will be awarded with medals for 1m and 3m springboard and 10m platform (M and W), while synchronized divers will be awarded with medals for 3m springboard and 10m platform (M, W and mixed).
The US delegation took part for the first time in a the Budapest Summer Universiade in 1965. As in many other disciplines, Americans won gold medals in all 4 divisions. Over time, diving has been ruled by Asian countries, as shown by the Taipei 2017 medal collection.
