Table tennis is one of the most growing disciplines internationally: The increasing number of spectators and players makes it one of the most followed disciplines. Thanks to a real forerunner such as China, table tennis appeared for the first time in a Universiade programme in the Beijing edition in 2001 and became a compulsory discipline in the Izmir edition in 2005.
Table tennis is the latest mandatory discipline in the Universiade programme. In Taipei, in 2017, Asian countries were the one to win the most medals, triumphing in all scheduled disciplines. The program will be the same for Napoli 2019 both for singles and doubles, with 24 teams in each category.
