The only compulsory programme just for women. Rhythmic gymnastics was introduced in the Universiade programme in the Sheffield 1991 edition as an optional sport, but from the following edition it became a compulsory sport, due to the large audience and the growing interest. All the gym apparatus is expected for Napoli 2019, as well as teams performing with 5 balls and 3 hoops and 2 ribbons.
In the first Sheffield edition, the participating athletes were only 19. North Korea won all the gold medals.
